Renewable Energy Infrastructure: What Gets Built and How It Connects

Renewable energy infrastructure is everything that has to be built to generate clean electricity, store it and deliver it to the grid: solar and wind generation, batteries, substations and the power lines that link them. These sites also need civil works, such as site preparation, earthworks, access roads, drainage, trenching and foundations.

  • Three jobs. The infrastructure generates power, stores it and connects it to the network.

  • Civil works are part of the build. Site preparation, earthworks, access roads, drainage, trenching and foundations all sit in the civil package.

  • Grid access is its own question. Access rights decide whether a project is allowed to send power to the grid.

What is renewable energy infrastructure?

Think of it as a chain. Generators produce electricity and export it to the grid. Storage projects, such as batteries, store excess electricity and send it to the grid when it is needed. Substations and power lines sit between them and the network.

In New South Wales, the government is developing renewable energy zones. NSW EnergyCo describes them as areas that will harness wind and solar to power homes and businesses across the state. Private developers plan, build and operate the generation and storage projects inside those zones.

The need is not limited to one state. Infrastructure Victoria notes that Victoria has a net zero emissions target for 2045 and needs large amounts of new energy infrastructure by 2035 to meet its emissions targets.

Renewable energy projects: generation and storage

This guide looks at three common project types: solar, wind and battery storage. Each one is part of the chain above.

Solar farm construction

Solar farm civil works are part of Pohl Group's renewable energy civil works. When you review a solar project, ask which civil activities are included in the civil package and who is responsible for each.

Wind farm construction

Wind energy infrastructure is part of the same service. On a wind project, ask for the civil scope to be listed item by item, so nothing falls between packages.

Battery storage

Batteries are the storage link. Infrastructure Victoria says that in Victoria, without more batteries, electricity prices may rise and reliance on gas power could increase. Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) are part of Pohl Group's renewable energy civil works.

Why storage matters: Batteries store excess energy and release it when needed, helping to stabilise the grid.

How projects reach the grid

Finishing construction does not connect a site. Power has to travel from the generator to the wider network, and that takes physical assets and permission.

How renewable energy projects connect to the grid

These are the parts NSW EnergyCo describes for its zones. The order below is a reading aid, not a required sequence.

  1. Generate or store. The project produces electricity or holds surplus electricity in batteries.

  2. Collect. Energy hubs, a type of substation, collect electricity from generators and transfer it to the broader grid.

  3. Link by power line. Projects connect through a dedicated or shared power line, either into the network or to an energy hub.

  4. Access rights. Access rights decide whether a project is allowed to send power to the grid.

Substations and transmission

Substations, trenching, conduit and foundations are where civil work meets the electrical network. Pohl Group's power infrastructure scope covers the civil side of this: high voltage substations, HV/MV/LV trenching, conduit installation, foundations, earthing systems and civil interfaces. The scope is civil work, not electrical work.

Common questions about renewable energy infrastructure

What counts as renewable energy infrastructure?

Generation such as solar and wind, storage such as batteries, and the substations and power lines that move electricity to the grid. The civil works for the sites are part of delivering it.

What is a renewable energy zone?

In New South Wales, it is the government's approach to harnessing wind and solar to power homes and businesses across the state, according to NSW EnergyCo.

Who builds and runs these projects?

In the NSW zones, private developers plan, build and operate generation and storage projects. On any project, ask who is responsible for the civil package.

Who supports renewable energy deployment in Australia?

ARENA, the federal agency, works to accelerate the innovation and deployment of renewable energy.

Can the equipment be recycled at the end of its life?

The Climate Council, an independent non-profit, says nearly all components of wind turbines, solar panels and lithium-ion batteries can be recycled. Ask the project owner about its own plans.

Renewable energy construction: where civil works fit

Headline equipment gets the attention, but the civil package is part of the job too. When you assess a renewable energy construction project, look at how access roads, drainage and trenching are sequenced, and who is responsible for each.

Pohl Group is a specialist civil contractor delivering renewable energy civil works: solar farm civil works, wind energy infrastructure, BESS and hydrogen infrastructure. The activities include site preparation, earthworks, access roads, drainage, trenching, underground services and concrete foundations.

Trenching and excavation near buried services carry their own risk, and non-destructive excavation is one way to protect underground assets. We cover that in our guide to vacuum excavation contractors.

Before you appoint anyone for this kind of work, run through a short list:

  • Ask which civil activities are in scope, such as earthworks, access roads, drainage and foundations.

  • Confirm who handles the interface with the electrical contractor.

  • Check how the contractor plans to protect underground services during trenching.

  • Request examples of similar work and ask what can be shared.

  • Ask how safety is managed on site, and get it in writing.

  • Agree how early works will be coordinated with the developer's program.

The Bottom Line: what to take from this

  • Renewable energy infrastructure is a chain. Generation, storage, substations and power lines work together.

  • Civil works are part of the build. Site preparation, access roads, drainage, trenching and foundations belong to the civil package.

  • Connection needs permission as well as cable. Access rights decide whether a project can send power to the grid.

  • Storage is part of the system. Batteries help stabilise the grid.

  • Ask for scope in writing. A clear line between civil and electrical work avoids gaps at the interface.

Working with renewable energy contractors

When you compare renewable energy contractors, look for a clear scope, a plan for working around underground services and an understanding of how the civil package meets the electrical one.

That is the civil work we do at Pohl Group, alongside contractors, developers and infrastructure partners. For more guides like this one, browse the Pohl Group blog. If you are weighing up a project, get in touch to discuss the civil scope.
